The track calls up memories of The Jam and The Clash with Schultz spitting out his staccato vocals, an urgency to the song in terms of tempo. We hit the ground running, left with no doubt as to the pain Schultz is feeling. The deeply personal nature of the album confronts us in this song, which sees Schultz finding difficulty in combining fame with his private life.
They ended up sending the track to Beck, who sent it back with his verses within 24 hours.
Schultz is thoughtful here, reflecting on the unavoidable end looming over him. His attempts at working his way through this knowledge and the gloom he feels is powerful and affecting, and will surely have an even greater effect at the end of the album.
There are moments when the calibre so evident on previous records does shine through. The underlying grit and melodies that, while not always appeasing the critics, certainly won Cage The Elephant an array of fans are largely absent, replaced by a series of flat and often forgettable tracks.

Real life madness? It is a fractured, hallucinatory love story hatched by myself and lyricist singer Matt Shultz. A tale of madness and mystery, the dark but melancholy story follows a young woman Juliette Buchs, the real Ames Shultz coming to terms with her past and her future. Perhaps a search for a love by a woman trying to outrun her past?
The highly anticipated follow up, released April 19 via RCA Records, cultivates a plaintive narrative about coming to terms with the tumultuous cycles of life and death. Offering commentary about the end of long relationships, the sudden passing of loved ones and the process of experiencing sadness and letting go, Cage the Elephant utilizes this album as a therapeutic purging of emotions.
The end result is a deeply heart-wrenching soundtrack about allowing yourself the opportunity to wallow in self-pity, as long as you bounce back once the mourning period is over.
But for the most part Nick wrote a lot of the string arrangements. I know some of the takes were recorded at the Ryman in Nashville. Growing up less than an hour away in Bowling Green, Kentucky, what was it like to finally play such a historic venue? It was amazing! For our band things get so crazy, we were worried that it would be a little bit too crazy to play there. For a band that is known for being so high energy was it weird to chill out and sit down on stage? No, it was refreshing! Instead of losing yourself in the moment and exchanging energy with the crowd, you get to lose yourself within the intricacies of the arrangements.
After meeting him at an event, Cage The Elephant sent the track his way and within 24-48 hours , Beck had already added two rap verses and sent it back.

More interesting is that final track, Goodbye. Recorded in one take while lying on the studio floor, Shultz wrote the song for his wife at the end of their relationship. On even casual analysis they do have all the predictable elements that sustained the group through their last four albums. The themes and images are familiar — loss of control, arson, and so forth.
This song is the loveliest moment on the recording. This outlook is surprising when understood in relation to the emotional beating Shultz has taken with the end of his marriage. It is a refreshing and inspired decision and another worthy track.
This moment produces an evocative emotional release before the album draws to a close. There is not a whole lot of progression on the release that will move the band forward but it is an enjoyable outing loaded with numerous hooks and ear candy. My fear is that it could all get old fast. Maybe being able to simply tread water was an accomplishment for the band at this stage?
