In contrast, ebony is a premium and very expensive wood. It has 24 frets, something very innovative and even today it is still rare considering that the guitar is built with a short scale of only 24 inches. The fretboard radius is 7. So: make it yourself! Make it Yourself: The Red Special The final guitar in the series is my favourite because it inspired me to build my own guitar when I was 16. They enjoyed a good challenge, and in true Queen fashion, decided that such an undertaking was worth doing right. Mantelpiece and knitting needles To begin with, the neck was made from a 100 year-old mahogany mantelpiece that his neighbour wanted to throw away — it was ideal for making a guitar, as the wood was now perfectly seasoned and thus less likely to warp. It still has some wormholes that Brian covered up with toothpicks. The fretboard was good old English oak, which is comparable to maple in hardness, so not a bad choice; Brian stained it black. He bought fretwire for threepence a foot, gracing the guitar with 24 frets, which range five octaves. The neck is bolted on to the body with an extra-long tenon, for added stability.
The body itself is semi-hollow, made from an old oak table, some blockboard and a mahogany laminate on the front. Brian wanted to make an f-hole but lacked the necessary tools.

The Red Special has six switches. When the Red Special was initially built, Brian tested out different configurations for pickup wiring. The pickups could be wired in parallel or series, and wired in phase or out of phase. The pickups are wired in series. The top row of switches from the guitarists view enables or shorts each of the three pickups. The short effectively acts as an on-off switch for that pickup. Pickups Every part of the Red Special was a process of trial and error. This is the true hacker spirit behind the guitar. An example of this is the pickups. All this wood was cut, carved, and shaped using only hand tools. Oak and mahogany are hardwoods, so one can imagine how long it took to carve a block of it into something resembling a guitar neck. Most guitar necks include a steel rod called a truss bar. This rod helps the wood pull against the tension of strings. The Red Special is no different. Brian and Harold heated one end of a steel rod, then bent it into a loop.
The loop was bolted at the body side of the guitar, while the rest of the bar runs through the neck to the headstock end. Brian originally wanted the guitar to be semi-acoustic, so he carved resonant chambers into the block board. He even planned to make an F-hole in the guitar body. The Red Special overlaid with an X-Ray view showing the internals, including the valve spring tremolo system Tremolo Rock guitarists need a tremolo or vibrato system. One or more strings will be out of tune.
The Fender synchronized tremolo had this issue, and the problems always came down to friction. Brian and Harold spent a lot of time on the tremolo system. Even with friction eliminated, something still has to provide enough force to hold the strings in tune, yet remain light enough for the guitarist to use the tremolo bar. Most tremolo systems use tension springs in the back of the guitar for this. Brian and Harold went with compression springs mounted on the front of the guitar.
Specifically, they used valve springs from a motorcycle. Two holes in the bottom of the guitar near the strap button allow Brian to adjust the tension in the overall system. The tremolo arm is probably the most talked about piece of the Red Special. The arm itself was built from the arm of a bicycle luggage rack. The sharp metal end of the rod would make playing the Red Special a painful experience. A large knitting needle, cut and formed just right, serves as the tip of the tremolo arm. I certainly needed a strong drink after some of those days! All humour aside however, even at the most difficult times in the repair process I realised that it was a tremendous privilege and opportunity to be working with Brian and his guitar tech Pete Malandrone, and that I had great responsibility to be as consistent and reliable as possible, and to not be nervous otherwise the results might suffer. It was certainly very helpful having Brian around to discuss the guitar and many other things with, and Brian and Pete were very gracious hosts indeed. Repairs: Neck: mahogany dowels made for glueing into various screw holes in headstock, these screw holes were from the first set of tuning heads which Brian fitted when the guitar was made, and also from the Gotoh locking heads which were fitted sometime in the 1980s. The white epoxy mix when dry was then carefully sanded down flush with the surface, avoiding sanding through the surrounding thin black fingerboard paint. The neck was finally overcoated with Rustins Plastic Coating with several coats both brushed and sprayed on. Switches, pots and jack were all examined and cleaned, any suspect areas of the wiring were resoldered. Body: Binding reglued around top of guitar and parts of the binding reglued on the back of the body. Mahogany veneer repaired or pieces replaced in several areas.
