So far, although Deep Purple has been very generous by releasing many tapes from their archives, these have not yet surfaced. Despite some of the limitations mentioned above these are all very listenable documents. This is of particular value since most of the tapes have not been widely booted in the past and those have are very old and hard to find. The label has released several impressive comprehensive Deep Purple sets over the past couple of years and this is another addition to an impressive catalogue.
Made In Japan is an important live album in the history of rock and many consider it to be the absolute peak of this Deep Purple line-up, playing the best live versions of their greatest songs. In lieu of the band releasing the complete soundboards from all three shows, Live In Japan Complete fills in a considerable void.

This title is limited to three hundred copies and for the committed fan this is definitely worth having.
It was a bit of a simple, albeit enjoyable track on Machine Head, and definitely not a standout like the other tracks featured on Made in Japan. And that is exactly what makes it so useful for its purpose on this album: a 20-minute jam session built completely on improvisation. You need to have unique musicians like Blackmore and Lord to make these sessions, and these boys know how to keep things going. Sure, the track is not going to be a regular listen, but the suspense the band manages to create for 20 minutes in total is astounding, as they put out their last drops of energy to close off one hell of a performance.
That fulfilled experience which is called Made in Japan will leave you thinking two things. One: There will never be any band quite as unique as Deep Purple, and two: Why should I even bother listening to their studio records again? What this band created in Japan in 1972, they, and certainly not anybody else, have ever equalled since. Forget In Rock. Forget Machine Head. If you were planning to ever get a single Deep Purple record, do yourself a favour and get this, as it tops literally everything they have ever done. This is one of the very best and unique live albums ever made, and more than just a couple of very good performances.
Disc 1: Osaka, August 15 1972. The first of three shows has begun! Both Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord are on fire, ripping through their parts with great aggression.
Blackmore makes a few mistakes during the solo, but who cares? Right from this opening salvo, you can hear the nuances and details of this new remix. Ritchie plays around a bit on the intro, as the crowd claps along. Clearly, they know the song.
